The RSF is proud to support Lakeridge and Campbell Hill Elementary School’s Team Read program. Team Read enables high school students to coach elementary school students who are currently reading below their grade level. This simultaneously provides high schoolers (coaches) with job experience while strengthening students’ reading and comprehension skills.
As pictured, coaches from Renton High School and 2nd through 3rd grade readers from Lakeridge Elementary are hard at work, teaching engaging lessons and diving into their workbooks. These lessons emphasize phonics, vocabulary, and comprehension, allowing students additional practice to build their literacy skills and confidence. The coaches play a critical role, as their words of encouragement and support inspire readers to reach their goals. Readers work with the same coach one-on-one, twice a week, creating a strong friendship with a trusted mentor.
Team Read’s personalized approach and hands-on learning proved itself successful as Carla Smith, Team Read’s hiring coordinator, shared, “Last year, at the end of the school year, after working one-on-one with a teen coach for one hour twice a week, 80% of our readers increased their reading level by 4 or more levels.”
Principal Carlito Umali at Lakeridge Elementary also shares, “The elementary school students are rising in their test scores, becoming better readers, becoming more confident students all around, not just in reading, but in science and social studies and at the playground.”
Team Read plays a key role in laying the foundation for future academic success, fostering a love for reading and learning.
